Frustrated? Angry? Irritable?

Symptoms of Depression

Not everyone who is depressed experiences every symptom. Some people experience only a few; some people suffer many. The severity of symptoms varies among individuals and also over time.

• Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" mood.

• Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism.

• Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness.

• Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyable, including sex.

• Decreased energy, fatigue; feeling "slowed down."

• Restlessness or irritability.

• Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions.

• Trouble sleeping, early morning awakening, or oversleeping.

• Changes in appetite and/or weight.

• Thoughts of death or suicide, or suicide attempts.

• Persistent physical symptoms, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain that do not respond to routine treatment.

The first step to getting appropriate treatment for depression is a physical examination by a physician. There are a variety of treatments, including medications and short-term psychotherapies (for example, "talk" therapies) that have proven effective for depression.

The most appropriate treatment will depend on the patient’s diagnosis, severity of symptoms and personal preference. Sometimes a combination of treatments are needed for the best outcome.

Contact your healthcare provider or call Connections (see below) for help finding treatment that is right for you.
